The hardest thing, for most people anyway, is coming up with a design idea. Sure, you could go to the store and get one of those kits complete with design and tools, but why not just do this? Look around your home for objects that might lend themselves to being used as inspiration for an idea. You can get these design ideas from fine China, linens, drapes are just about anything. Sometimes just the flower design on a sheet or curtain will be all you need to come up with a great cake design. Use your imagination. You do have one after all.
Next problem is where to get all the fancy tools that you need. Well, thanks to the Internet, you don’t even have to leave your home anymore. You can get just about any cake decorating tool in existence online, from spatulas to pans to icing tips. You can buy these tools in kits (I’ve seen kits of up to 50 pieces) or you can buy them separately depending on your needs. Because there is no cost associated with hiring sales people, you can probably find these items cheaper than if you go to your local store.
Finally, make sure that you have everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING that you need BEFORE you actually start working on your cake. The last thing that you want is to go reaching for a tool to start applying that pretty rose colored design only to find out that it didn’t come in the kit that you bought and you didn’t purchase it separately either. So do an inventory check before you even toss that thing in the oven. This way, if you’re missing something, you can run out and get it BEFORE the horses are out fo the barn and you can’t get them back in.
